There were many Indian Residential Schools across Canada beginning in the 1870s to the closure of the last school in 1996. These schools took Indigenous children from their families and communities in an effort to take away their culture, language and traditions - "kill the Indian in the child". This was an act of colonization and genocide. These schools have caused intergenerational damage to Indigenous People and their communities across Canada.
The first day that marked the observance of the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation was September 30, 2021, This day is recognized as Orange T-Shirt Day and honours the survivors of Residential Schools in Canada and to remember the children who did not make it. If you have an Orange T-Shirt, wear it on this day to honour ALL the children of residential schools in Canada.
